British fisherman are angry and Hugh's backing them all the way! You may remember Hugh's sucessful chicken out campaign, well this is Fish in!
"The problem is that in a mixed fishery where many different fish live together, fishermen cannot control the species that they catch.
Fishing for one species often means catching another, and if people don’t want them or fishermen are not allowed to land them, the only option is to throw them overboard. The vast majority of these discarded fish will die.
Because discards are not monitored, it is difficult to know exactly how many fish are being thrown away. The EU estimates that in the North Sea, discards are between 40% and 60% of the total catch. Many of these fish are species that have fallen out of fashion: we can help to prevent their discard just by rediscovering our taste for them.
The main fish that targetted by the British are prime cod, haddock and plaice and as a result very quickly end up “over-quota” each month and so need to be thrown dead back into the sea. The quota system is intended to protect fish stocks by setting limits on how many fish of a certain species should be caught.
Fishermen are not allowed to land any over-quota fish; if they accidentally catch them – which they can’t help but do - there is no choice but to throw them overboard before they reach the docks."
Half of all fish caught in the north sea are thrown back overboard dead. The is known in the fishing industry as discard. Hugh’s Fish Fight is supported by fellow chefs Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal and Jamie Oliver and also a wide coalition of environmental Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and hopefully by a growing number of fishermen and policy makers too.

Here at Natural Food Finder we support the intake and eating of ocean caught fish in preference to farmed fish. We are appalled that so much fish is being needlessly wasted just to satisfy an outdated fishery quota. Farmed fish are beginning to take over the stocks sold in the supermarket. This is not nutritionally superior fish! We must prevent the waste and re-establish our love of many varieties of ocean caught fish. There is so much more variety than just cod, haddock, salmon and tuna. Be adventurous and try something new!
