Gary taubes--why we get fat

I read just about every book I can lay my hands on looking for an explanation of why carbohydrates make me fat. Most books tell me that, all about insulin etc which makes sense, but it still left a niggling question. Why when i was younger and certainly no more active, did i eat lots of carbohydrates and not put on weight. And why do i have very lean friends who can tuck into pasta, bread and pastry at every meal. Now I can stop looking. The Gary Taubes book has explained it all. It now makes perfect sense and I can defend my take on cutting out sugar and carbs and artificial sweeteners from my diet. I must read it again to get the science into my head for those that question me deeper. But for a reply to people first question about why I avoid certain foods I like his comment " we accept that some peoples body cannot cope with sugar--its called diabetis, well some peoples body cannot cope with other carbohydrates, its a similar metabolic problem". It tends to satisfy most people and stop them thinking I am some sort of diet nutter.
