The Blackface Meat Company

The Blackface Meat Company believes passionately in the link between a healthy landscape and the highest quality meat. The two are so closely bound that the flavour of our products is of the land itself: the heather and the berries; the wild grasses and fresh waters of the burns found in the most beautiful, unspoilt regions of Britain.
We are a small family business, rearing Blackface sheep and Galloway cattle on our heather clad hill farm in the South West of Scotland. We supply a wide range of high quality, oven-ready game from selected Scottish estates and we also source slow grown 'Iron Age' pork and Christmas turkeys from nearby farms. This is the lamb, mutton, game, beef and pork enjoyed by our ancestors, now available all over the UK via our efficient home delivery service.
Our ewes lamb in late April and early May out on the hill. The ewes and lambs remain there until the last week of August enjoying the diverse moorland vegetation of heather, blaeberries, mosses and grasses. By this stage the best lambs will have reached a carcass weight of 16-18 kg and are ideal for the table.
Our Galloway cattle help with the heather regeneration on the hill at Troloss, where our flock of Blackface sheep graze. They are excellent converters of the many wild grasses that grow on the hill. The Galloway breed is unchanged since Roman times, when they were recorded by the invaders. They have a thick double black coat, making them hardy enough to live in the extremes of the weather in the hills of Dumfries and Galloway. Our winters can be very long and cold, with snow clinging onto the high hills at our farm well into April. The summers are often warmer than in the north of Scotland but the stocky Galloways take it all in their stride as they roam our 6,000 acres of wild hillside.
We deliver to most of the mainland UK overnight, to arrive by noon the following day. Delivery is free, although there is a charge for delivery to the Highlands and Islands, which takes 2 days.
