Human Nourishment

Most of the added ingredients in today's food are unnecessary for human nourishment. In some cases, they may even be harmful. These additives exist for three reasons.

  1. To mimic freshness by artificially extending the shelf life of the food. Without these additives, many foods would quickly go stale and rot.
  2. Commercial food don't taste good, so additives are used to enhance flavour as well as visible appeal.
  3. Manufacturers are always looking for ways to cut costs and increase profits.
